by Kim Papaioannou
My name is Kim. Though in the
Americas Kim might be mostly a female name, in Europe it is usually a male
name. I have served as a pastor for 14 years in three different countries in
Europe, Greece, the United Kingdom, and now Cyprus. In between pastoring
assignments I earned a PhD in theology and also taught theology at tertiary
level.
What is it like being a pastor in
Europe? Pastors in Europe generally are
assigned fewer congregations than their counterparts in other parts of the
world. Whereas a pastor in Latin America may have five or more congregations,
and one in Africa, ten or more, a pastor in Europe will usually have one or two
(depending on the size of the congregations) and rarely more than three. And
whereas a pastor in Latin America may be responsible for the oversight of 500
or 1,000 members, a European counterpart will usually have less than 200, and
often less than one hundred.
